The status words on your Spanish nationality file: what the official texts say and what no page defines
You checked your file and the screen shows words such as “Abierto – En tramitación” or “En calificación”. We found no Ministry page that lists these words or says what each one means, so this guide does not invent a meaning for them. It gives what official texts do say: the exact wording an official body recorded from the screen, the steps the regulation lists, and where a notification that counts would arrive, with the official text under each line. Free. This guide does not assess your file.

1. What the screen is
The Ministry's sede page for checking nationality files says what the screen is for. sede.mjusticia.gob.es, página del trámiteOfficial wording

La información que el Ministerio de Justicia ofrece en esta página no tiene carácter de notificación.
The notification is a separate act. The Ministry's leaflet says you can access the nationality notifications through DEHú, and describes the ones you have not opened yet as pending for ten calendar days, after which they count as made. Ahora, puedes acceder a las notificaciones del trámite de nacionalidad a través de la herramienta DEHú en la Sede Judicial Electrónica con rapidez y sencillez.

2. The words
The only official record we found of the screen's own wording is in two resolutions of the Defensor del Pueblo, the parliamentary ombudsman, from 2021. In the first, the resolution records the file as being in this state: Defensor del Pueblo, resolución sobre una solicitud de nacionalidad por residencia (12/05/2021), resolución del 12/05/2021, queja 21009091Official wording
encontrándose en el siguiente estado “Abierto-en tramitación-. Su expediente se encuentra en calificación”.
Defensor del Pueblo, resolución sobre una solicitud de nacionalidad por residencia (09/06/2021), resolución del 09/06/2021, queja 21010333Official wording
se comprueba que el expediente se encuentra estado “Abierto – En tramitación. Su expediente se encuentra en calificación.”
What no official page says. We found no Ministry page that lists the words the screen can show or says what each one means, and none of the Ministry pages we saved uses “calificación”. Law-firm pages and forums give a meaning to each word; the list we read cites no official source. This guide does not repeat those meanings.
What the words say as ordinary Spanish. This is a dictionary reading, not an official definition of any stage:
- Abierto: open. Registrado: registered.
- En tramitación: in process. En estudio: under study.
- En calificación: in assessment.
- Pendiente de recepción de informe: waiting for a report to arrive.
- Requerimiento, requerido: a request made to you, asked of you.
- Concedido: granted. Denegado: refused.
- Archivado, desistimiento: closed, withdrawal.
A word that reads like a stage does not prove that the stage has happened, and none of these words gives a date.
3. The actions the order lists, and who decides
The Ministry's order says that, while the file is being examined, the Dirección General carries out a list of actions. Orden JUS/1625/2016, art. 7.2Official wording
Another item on that list is asking you for any other document, the kind of request a requerimiento can be. Orden JUS/1625/2016, art. 7.2, 8.ªOfficial wording
Solicitud al interesado de cualquier otro documento que se considere necesario para acreditar el cumplimiento de los requisitos establecidos en el artículo 22 del Código Civil
A requerimiento in your file: the three months
The regulation also says who proposes and who decides. The Dirección General drafts a proposal to grant or refuse, to be sent up to the Minister of Justice. Real Decreto 1004/2015, art. 11.1Official wording
The maximum period is one year from when the application reached the Dirección General. Real Decreto 1004/2015, art. 11.3Official wording
El procedimiento deberá ser resuelto y notificado en el plazo máximo de un año desde de que la solicitud haya tenido entrada en la Dirección General de los Registros y del Notariado.
Real Decreto 1004/2015, art. 11.3Official wording
Transcurrido el plazo aludido sin que haya recaído resolución expresa, se entenderán desestimadas las solicitudes formuladas por los interesados.
Which step a given word refers to, no page says. Do not read a date or a promise into a word.
4. What to do with a word
- If the screen or a message mentions a requerimiento or documents: look in DEHú for the notification. The three months run from the notification of the request, not from what the screen shows.
- If it names a resolution, granted or refused: the resolution reaches you by notification, so open DEHú. A notification not opened within ten days counts as made.
- If it says the file is closed or withdrawn: see a lawyer.
- If it is any other word: count from the day your application entered. The maximum is one year, and the guide on a file silent after a year says what the law says then.
If you do not receive an answer to a request, the Ministry gives the telephone numbers and the Telegram bot in the status guide above.
When to see a lawyer
- The screen names a resolution and you have not received a notification.
- A requerimiento is mentioned and the three months are running.
- The screen says the file is closed or withdrawn.
- A year has passed from the day your application entered and nothing has arrived.
These are general pointers, not an assessment of your case. A lawyer or the Ministry should confirm what applies to you. CiviqPass does not name or recommend a lawyer.
