In short
- Criminal record: The Ministry of Justice and Public Security issues the Constancia de antecedentes penales; the Foreign Ministry says compatriots abroad can get it with an electronic apostille through simple.sv, whose page states no period of validity for it, only 30 calendar days on the server, so the clock below uses Spain's six-month default.
- Birth and marriage: The RNPN lists a certification of partidas at $5.00 ("en El Salvador") and another at $35.00 ("en el exterior") and says neither has a vigencia, which depends on the institution presenting it; we found no official page saying which one a person in Spain should ask for or how they obtain it.
- Apostille: El Salvador is party to the Apostille Convention; the Foreign Ministry is the only body designated to issue the apostille for Salvadoran documents and says it is free.
- Translation: We found no official page saying whether a document already in Spanish needs translation; Spain's order says "traducido en su caso" for the birth certificate and "traducido" for the criminal record.
- Order: Our arithmetic, not an official rule: request first the documents that need an apostille (and a translation, if one is required), then the criminal record certificate, so that you can finish its apostille and translation while it is still valid; the clock below gives the dates.
Each line sums up a section below. The sources are in that section.

1. Criminal record certificate
The Foreign Ministry's news item of 18 April 2023 says the Government of El Salvador enabled the digital platform simple.sv, a tool for compatriots living abroad to obtain the constancia de antecedentes penales with its electronic apostille.[1][2] The simple.sv page for the Constancia de antecedentes penales (certificate of criminal record) describes it as a certificate that natural persons of Salvadoran origin have no records of criminal convictions with final effect (ejecutoriada) imposed on them for an offence.[3] The news item says the document is issued (otorgado) by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.[4]

2. Birth certificate, and marriage certificate if you are married
The page of the Registro Nacional de las Personas Naturales (RNPN) on the Certificación de partidas en El Salvador describes it as a document issued by the RNPN that certifies the partida or partidas found with the data given for the search in the Registro de Estados Vitales y Familiares system.[1] The page speaks of partidas in general and does not name birth or marriage certificates. It gives a cost of $5.00 "de los Estados Unidos de América", payable in cash or electronically,[2] and a waiting time of "2 hora" from entry of the request form.[3]
The simple.sv price table for the Certificación de partidas lists a $5.00 "Certificación de partida de El Salvador" and a $35.00 "Certificación de partidas en el exterior".[4] The RNPN has a separate page, Certificación de partida en el exterior, which gives a cost of $35.00 "de los Estados Unidos de América", payable in cash or electronically.[5] That page describes the document in the same words as the El Salvador page and does not say who may ask for it. We found no official page saying which of the two a person who lives in Spain should ask for.
The simple.sv page for the same service gives an average resolution time of 24 working hours from entry of the form,[6] and says a third party can do the procedure without an authorisation document.[7] The two pages give different times: ask the RNPN.
The RNPN's service guide lists, under the heading of online services abroad (servicios en línea en el exterior), a list that includes Certificación de Partidas.[8] We found no official page saying whether that online service covers a Salvadoran partida for a person who lives in Spain, or which of the two certifications it refers to, or saying that a consulate in Spain issues partidas registered in El Salvador. The Barcelona news item lists registros del estado familiar (nacimientos, matrimonios y defunciones) among the consulate's procedures without saying what they cover.[9] Ask the RNPN.
Validity. The RNPN page says the certification has no vigencia and that it depends on the institution to which it is presented.[10] The simple.sv page says the certificate obtained has no expiry.[11] The RNPN page for the certification en el exterior says the same of that certification.[12] Spain's order says all documents must be in force when you apply, and that for certificates the validity stated on the document counts.[13][14] We found no Spanish text saying how the registry treats a certificate that states no validity: ask the registry.
The RNPN also offers the Auténtica de firma de registrador local. It describes it as a statement by the Registrador Nacional that the signature on the partida corresponds to the person in charge of the local family-status registry.[15] It says the service is mostly used for procedures before institutions abroad.[16] The cost is $20.00 "de los Estados Unidos de América"[17] and the waiting time 2 hours from entry of the request form.[18] The page's warning reads "Presentar certificación de partida certificada original y vigente menos de 1 año de haber sido emitida".[19] The sentence does not say whether it is the partida or the auténtica that must be under one year old, and it states no rule for the apostille.
The Foreign Ministry's page on auténticas and apostillas lists partidas del estado familiar (nacimiento, matrimonio, defunción, divorcio, constancia de soltería) among the documents for which it gives the steps to take before the auténtica process at the Ministry.[20] It also lists certificaciones de partidas del estado familiar among the administrative documents that are apostilled.[21] We found no official page saying whether the RNPN's auténtica must be obtained before the apostille: ask the Foreign Ministry.
Spain asks for the birth certificate of the country of origin, legalised and translated where needed.[22] If you are married, it also asks for the marriage certificate of the country where the marriage took place.[23] The RNPN page does not name marriage certificates: ask the registry that holds the entry. We found no official Spanish text saying which kind of copy (extract or full) Spain wants.

3. Apostille and legalisation
The HCCH status table lists El Salvador with an accession dated 14 September 1995 and entry into force on 31 May 1996.[1] The HCCH page lists the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the competent authority designated by El Salvador.[2]
The Foreign Ministry's page says El Salvador is a member of the Hague Convention, so documents can be apostilled, and that this is left to the decision of the person concerned.[3] It says the Ministry is the only body designated in El Salvador to issue apostilles for Salvadoran documents, and that the apostille is free (GRATUITA).[4] We found no processing time for the apostille on that page. Spain's Foreign Ministry says, on its page on diplomatic legalisation, that documents from countries that signed the Apostille Convention are not legalised.[5]
The Foreign Ministry's news item says the apostille is a certification issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Hague Convention, which gives documents validity in the countries party to it.[6] Its page of regional offices, updated on 1 December 2023, lists among the apostilled public documents the administrative documents, including certificaciones de partidas del estado familiar.[7][8] We found no page that lists the constancia de antecedentes penales there, apart from the news item on simple.sv.[9]
There is an Apostilla Electrónica portal at apostilla.rree.gob.sv, which says you can request the electronic apostille of your documents from anywhere in the world.[10] An HCCH notification on the electronic Apostille programme says that in El Salvador an e-Apostille may be issued on electronic public documents, by the competent authority, as of 5 December 2022.[11] We found no page saying which of your documents the portal takes, what it costs or how long it takes, and no page saying whether the Spanish registry accepts an electronic apostille: ask the registry.
Spain's Foreign Ministry says, about its own diplomatic legalisation, that it has no expiry date but, if the document has a validity period, the legalisation does not extend it.[12] We found no Spanish text saying the same of an apostille, and no Salvadoran page that states an expiry or validity for the apostille.
We found no official page that says Salvadoran consulates in Spain apostille Salvadoran documents. The Foreign Ministry's page names the Ministry as the only body designated to issue the apostille for Salvadoran documents.[13] The Spanish Ministry of Justice warning calls legalisation of foreign documents an essential requirement.[14] Ask the Foreign Ministry or the consulate which route applies to your document.

4. Translation into Spanish
We found no official Salvadoran or Spanish page saying that a document already in Spanish needs, or does not need, a translation. Spain's order says "traducido en su caso" for the birth certificate and "traducido" for the criminal record.[1][2]
The Spanish Ministry of Justice warning says translation is done or checked at Spanish consulates abroad or at the consular offices in Spain of the document's country of origin, and that the documents must then be legalised. It adds that a sworn translator-interpreter named by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can do the translation or check.[3][4]

5. Consulates in Spain
The Foreign Ministry's directory of embassies and consulates lists three consulates general in Spain. The Madrid one is at Calle de Villanueva 35, Local Bajo, 28001 Madrid,[1] the Barcelona one at Carrer del Dr. August Pi i Sunyer 12, 1ra Planta, 08034 Barcelona,[2] and the Sevilla one at Avenida Menéndez y Pelayo, Nº8, Sevilla.[3]
The directory is undated and does not say which consulate serves which region. The Barcelona news item of July 2023 lists the procedures available at that consulate, including family-status registrations and antecedentes penales.[4][5] We did not find pages of the Madrid or Sevilla consulates on these documents: ask the consulate before you go.

6. Order of requests and validity
Spain's order says that all documents must be in force when you apply.[1] For certificates, the validity stated on the certificate itself counts,[2] and a criminal record certificate with no stated validity counts for six months from the day it was issued.[3]
Legalisation does not make a document last longer. Spain's Foreign Ministry says legalisation has no expiry date but that, if the document has a validity period, legalisation does not extend it.[4]
When you create the online application you have two months to complete and file it, or it is deleted.[5]
Our arithmetic, not an official rule. The sources above fix how long a document stays valid, not the order in which you request things. If the validity counts from the day of issue, and the apostille and a sworn translation take time afterwards, the request date matters most for the documents with the shortest validity. Type a date in the clock below to see when your criminal record certificate stops being valid, then count back the time the apostille and the translation take in your case.
- Find out what validity, if any, each issuer prints on its certificate (the sections above say what we found).
- Request first the documents that need an apostille and a sworn translation, since those steps come after issue.
- Request the criminal record certificate when you can still finish its apostille and translation inside its validity.
- Type its issue date in the clock below and file before the "valid until" date it shows.
- Create the online application only when you are close to filing: from creation you have two months.
