The Spanish nationality oath (jura): what to bring and where to do it

1. Two routes: the Registro Civil or a notary

The Ministry says the oath or promise can be made before the Registro Civil officer and also before a notary.

2. Which office

For the Registro Civil, the competent office is the one at the address in your grant resolution.

3. What to bring

What you bring depends on the range of your file number. The Ministry's circular sets out two ranges. The Instruction's annex gives slightly different bounds, so if your number is near an edge or outside these ranges, the texts read here do not tell you what to bring: ask the registry or notary.

The birth certificate and the criminal record do not have to be current today: they had to be in force when you filed.

4. The 180 days

The grant has to be followed by the oath within 180 days counted from the day after the notification of the resolution.

Do not decide alone whether you are in time. Whether the 180 days have run for you, and what to do if they have, depend on your dates and your file. Ask the registry or a lawyer before you assume you are in time or out of it.

The oath deadline: your date, worked out

Type the date you were notified of the grant and read the last day of the 180 days, with the official rule beside it. Nothing is stored or sent: the calculation runs in your browser. Add the date to your calendar with reminders 60, 30 and 7 days before.

How we count

Months and years end on the same day number, or on the last day of the month if there is no such day; they start the day after the date you give. A deadline that ends on a weekend moves to the next working day. Document validity is not moved: the date shown is the last day it stays valid, even on a weekend. Days are working days unless a law says otherwise.

5. At the oath

At the oath you swear or promise fidelity to the King and obedience to the Constitution and the laws.
