How we count

Months and years end on the same day number, or on the last day of the month if there is no such day; they start the day after the date you give. A deadline that ends on a weekend moves to the next working day. Document validity is not moved: the date shown is the last day it stays valid, even on a weekend. Days are working days unless a law says otherwise.

In short

  • Criminal record: People born in Algeria, or who lived there, can request bulletin no. 3 of the criminal record at the embassy's consular office; we found no Algerian validity period, and Spain's order treats a certificate with none as valid six months from issue.

Each line sums up a section below. The sources are in that section.

1. Criminal record certificate

The Spanish-language page of the Algerian embassy in Madrid (site mfa.gov.dz) says that nationals born in Algeria, and foreigners who lived in Algeria, can ask for bulletin no. 3 of the criminal record (casier judiciaire) at the consular office.[1] It says the bulletin is written in Arabic and that applicants can ask for a French version.[2]

The same page says the person concerned must make the request, showing an Algerian ID document and, if Algerian by birth, a birth certificate.[3] It says fees are required but gives no amount.[4]

The English page of the same embassy site says the Algerian community abroad, and foreign nationals who lived in Algeria and now live abroad, may obtain a copy of their judicial record (casier judiciaire no. 3) from the Embassy.[5] Its list of what to provide includes a self-addressed prepaid envelope.[6]

Validity. We found no readable Algerian page that states a validity period for this certificate. Spain's order says all documents must be in force when you apply, and that a criminal record with no stated validity counts for six months from the day it was issued.[7][8]

Spain asks for the criminal record certificate of the country of origin, legalised and translated.[9] The Algerian Ministry of Justice has pages on the online criminal record (bulletin no. 3) at certification.mjustice.dz, but they did not load from Spain, so we could not read who issues the certificate, how to request it online, its validity or its cost. We also found no page on how a person who is not registered at a consulate can apply from Spain: ask your consulate.

When to see a lawyer

  • A document is refused and you do not know why.
  • Your names are spelled differently in your documents.
  • A required document cannot be obtained.
  • You are near a deadline.

These are general triggers, not an assessment of your case. A lawyer should confirm what applies to you. CiviqPass does not name or recommend a lawyer.
