1. The second surname field

The Ministry's online guide for the application tells you to fill in the first and second surname as they appear on the applicant's identity document.

If your document shows one surname. We found no official text on what to enter in the second-surname box in that case. The guide above is the only page we read that names the field, and it says nothing about a missing second surname or about leaving the box empty. We do not tell you what to type, because no official line supports an answer. Ask the Ministry before you submit, and note what you were told and the date. The contact page of the sede (the Ministry's electronic office) lists a telephone for citizen information.

The guide on the oath covers the surnames that are entered in the Registro Civil after the grant. That is a later step and a different record; it does not say what the online field takes.

2. Cl@ve, the digital certificate and AutoFirma

The online route on the nationality page is called “Tramitación On-line con Certificado Digital”.

The sede says it allows different ways to identify yourself and sign requests and payments, depending on the procedure.

Cl@ve has its own registration, which is needed for Cl@ve PIN and Cl@ve Permanente and not if you use a certificate or the electronic DNI.

Settle your signature before you start. The pages we read do not say whether Cl@ve PIN or Cl@ve Permanente, without a digital certificate, is enough to sign this application. The signing page lists digital certificates and the guide names Cl@ve, so check with the Ministry. An application that is not signed and submitted within two months of its creation date is deleted automatically.

3. Who is applying

At step 5 the guide asks you to click one of three options: made by the applicant, made by the representative who exercises parental authority, guardianship or curatorship, or made by a representative with a mandate or power.

The sede says the form can be used for yourself or as the legal representative of a minor or of a person with a disability who requires support measures to exercise their legal capacity,

The pages we read do not say what the mandate must contain beyond proving the representation. Ask the Ministry or a lawyer before a representative starts.

4. The Ministry's 16 steps, one by one

The Ministry's guide to the online application has 16 numbered steps. Below, each one: what it asks, the guide's own line, and a sketch of the fields it names. The sketch is ours, drawn from the guide's field names. It is not a screenshot of the sede and the real screens may look different.

  1. Open the Ministry's nationality page on the sede (its electronic office).

  2. Choose the online route with a digital certificate.

  3. Choose a Cl@ve identification method. The guide does not say which one; section 2 has what the pages say about signing.

  4. Start a new application.

  5. Say who is applying: the applicant, a representative with parental authority, guardianship or curatorship, or a representative with a mandate or power. Section 3 has what the sede says about each.

  6. Fill in the NIE, the support number, the first name and the first and second surname, as they appear on the applicant's identity document. The guide does not say where to find the support number or what to enter when the document shows one surname.

  7. Select marital status, sex, and the country, town or city and date of birth.

  8. Fill in the year since which the applicant has lived in Spain and the two “child of” fields, “Hijo/a de (1)” and “Hijo/a de (2)”, then select the main nationality. The guide says no more about what goes in them.

  9. Select the fields for a person whose capacity has been judicially modified and for belonging to the armed forces.

  10. Click “Seleccionar una opción” and choose one of three cases: general case, married to a Spaniard, or stateless. The guide gives no rule for choosing, and neither do we.

  11. Click one of the entries under “Seleccionar una opción”. The guide does not say what these entries are.

  12. Fill in a first name and a first and second surname, and select marital status and sex. The guide does not say whose details these are.

  13. Fill in the home address section (“Domicilio del Interesado”) and press “Crear Solicitud” (create application). The sede says the application still has to be signed and submitted (see the warning below).

  14. Click the message “Solicitud guardada correctamente”. It says the application was saved and asks you to complete the information; the guide's line is cut off there.

  15. Click “Modificar solicitud” (edit application).

  16. Press “Guardar” (save). The guide ends here: it has no step for attaching the documents, signing or submitting.

5. Documents and form 790

During the application you must provide various documents, which you scan and attach.

The sede's general help page says your browser needs JavaScript on to sign and send the application,

Ask the Ministry or a lawyer about

  • What to enter in the second-surname box when your document shows one surname.
  • Where to find the support number the guide asks for.
  • Which of the three form options (general case, married to a Spaniard, stateless) matches your situation: the guide gives no rule.
  • Whether Cl@ve PIN or Cl@ve Permanente alone can sign this application.
  • Which screens come after “Guardar”: attaching the documents, signing and submitting.
  • What the mandate of a voluntary representative must contain.
