Before you pay a lawyer for your Spanish nationality file: a second-opinion checklist
Do you need a lawyer? After a refusal, the texts we read require one only on the court route, before the Audiencia Nacional, where a lawyer assists in every case; for a reposición appeal we found no line that requires one. Before you pay one, this checklist covers what to gather, where free first advice is written into the law, questions to put to a lawyer, how to check who you are paying, and an email that asks three lawyers for the same quote. CiviqPass does not name or recommend a lawyer. Free.
In Spanish. You copy it from this page; nothing is stored.

1. What to gather first
A lawyer can only judge your refusal from your papers. Put these in one folder, each with its date:
- The refusal notice, complete, with the day it was made available and the day you opened it.
- The receipt of your application, with the file number.
- Every request to fix or add documents (requerimiento) and what you sent back.
- The documents you submitted, as you submitted them.
- Your own timeline of residence and the permits you held.
The refusal guide: the notice, its date and the deadlines the texts give

5. Signs to look at twice
Look twice if
- No Colegio or colegiado number is given, or the number is not in the register.
- You are asked to pay before you have an engagement sheet (hoja de encargo) or an equivalent in writing.
- You are promised a result. Art. 48.3 of the statute requires the lawyer to inform you about viability; that article says nothing about promises.
- You are asked for your Cl@ve password, your digital certificate or other passwords, or for scans over a chat app.
- The fee cannot be broken down on an invoice.
This is our editorial list, not a legal test, and none of these proves anything on its own. CiviqPass does not name or recommend a lawyer.
6. An email to get the same quote from three lawyers
Send the same email to each lawyer and compare the answers as well as the price. It is in Spanish because the file is. It asks for several things the statute says a lawyer must tell you, and for some it does not (route, deadline, documents reviewed). Replace every [BRACKET] with your own data.
