Preparing for the CCSE in English when Spanish is not your strongest language
The CCSE questions are written in Spanish, but you can learn the content in your own language. Understand each topic in English, memorise the matching Spanish term, then practise under real conditions: 25 questions in 45 minutes, with 15 correct answers needed to pass.
Sources: Spanish Constitution (BOE); Real Decreto 1004/2015, art. 6; Instituto Cervantes, CCSE preparation page. Read on 19 October 2026. The Cervantes site was under maintenance on 17 October, so the format figures come from the excerpt of its specifications.
What do you need to know before you start?
The CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España) goes with the DELE A2 in an application for Spanish nationality by residence. It has 25 questions in 5 tasks, lasts 45 minutes and is passed with 15 correct answers. The questions are multiple choice (three options) or true/false, and they are written in Spanish.
The language level you need is the level of reading one short question, not holding a conversation. For most topics the hurdle is vocabulary, not grammar.
Steps 1 and 2: understand in English, remember the Spanish word
60% of the content is about the Constitution and the administrative and territorial organisation of Spain (Real Decreto 1004/2015, art. 6.3). Learn these ideas in English, then pair each with its Spanish term, because that is the word you will read in the question. Here are ten terms from the Constitution.
| Spanish (in the question) | English | Article |
|---|---|---|
| Monarquía parlamentaria | Parliamentary monarchy | art. 1.3 |
| Lengua oficial (el castellano) | Official language | art. 3 |
| Bandera | Flag | art. 4 |
| Capital del Estado (Madrid) | Capital of the State | art. 5 |
| Mayoría de edad | Age of majority (18) | art. 12 |
| Igualdad ante la ley | Equality before the law | art. 14 |
| Jefe del Estado (el Rey) | Head of State | art. 56.1 |
| Cortes Generales | Parliament (both chambers) | art. 66.1 |
| Congreso de los Diputados | Congress of Deputies | art. 66.1 |
| Senado | Senate | art. 66.1 |
You can check every row in the BOE text. To see these terms in real questions, open our 8 practice questions, in Spanish, with the article cited.
Step 3: time yourself
45 minutes for 25 questions is 108 seconds per question. Reading Spanish takes longer than reading your own language, so practice without a clock gives you a false idea of your speed. The CiviqPass mock reproduces the 45 minutes and gives you a score out of 25 to compare with the 15 you need.

A mock shows where you lose points. No question in our mock is taken from the real exam.
Before you prepare
Check whether you are exempt: who is exempt from the DELE A2 and the CCSE (page in Spanish). The full requirements are in Spanish nationality by residence: years and exams, and the exam format is detailed in CCSE exam format: questions, time and pass mark.
