Who has to sit the DELE A2 for Spanish nationality? A list by nationality

Sources: 3 links, read on 21 October 2026.

Real Decreto 1004/2015, article 6 (BOE); Orden JUS/1625/2016, article 10 (BOE); Instituto Cervantes, DELE FAQ (copy of 21 Jul 2026), read on 21 October 2026.

By law, the DELE A2 is not required of nationals of 20 Spanish-speaking countries and territories, of anyone who already holds a DELE diploma at A2 or higher, or of anyone who shows the level with an official A2, B1 or B2 certificate from an Escuela Oficial de Idiomas (official language school).

Brazil, the Philippines, Portugal and Andorra are not on the list. The Philippines, Portugal and Andorra get 2 years of residence from the text of the Code; for Brazil, its card cites the court judgments behind that. Almost every adult sits the CCSE; the exemptions are on the cards below.

Situations that exempt or allow a waiver

Under the law, these situations exempt you from the DELE or let you ask for a waiver. One short card for each (in Spanish):

Situations that do not exempt

These two situations do not exempt you from the DELE on their own; each card explains why (in Spanish):

Dates, registration deadlines and fee: CCSE and DELE 2026: dates, fees and rules. Years of residence for each case: years-and-exams checker. Who is exempt, with the legal text: the exemptions page (in Spanish).
